Tomo Uyesugi 上杉トモ Exhibition (October 2016)

「Between Abstract & Figurative」

上杉トモは2006年米国の州立大学を卒業して以来一貫して写真から得たイメージを題材にして絵を描き、現代絵画の物質性の在り方を模索してきました。 ハイテクノロジーを積極的に肯定し電子化していく昨今の現代アートのあり方に疑問を覚えた上杉はハイテクを引用しつつも、絵画でしか表現できない手法に拘る事により、アートにとっての身体性の重要性を提示しています。

昨年より二度目となるYōkai SOHOの個展では前回「#TagMyName」に引き続きインスタグラムで収集されたアノニマスな自撮り写真を作品のモティーフに、そして今回は新しく家族友人達のプライベート写真からもイメージが選出され、それらはキャンバス上で絵画として再構築されています。具象と抽象の狭間にある上杉の作品は見るという行為の本質に鑑賞者を誘います。

Since 2006, after studying in San Diego, Tomo Uyesugi has been exploring the fundamental materiality of contemporary painting through works based on previously taken photographs. Confronted by an age of high technology in which every artifacts tend to be digitalized, rather than expressing their materiality through painting, Tomo emphasizes the importance of an embodied experience.

This solo exhibition at Yōkai SOHO invites the viewer to reconsider the act of seeing. Following his previous exhibition “#TagMyName” (2015) for which Tomo had selected images anonymously uploaded to Instagram, this new series of paintings is elaborated from his private collection of photographs of his friends and family. These images are an interpretation of portraits represented between abstract and figurative styles.
